Shakespeare is the first writer known to use the phrase “With bated breath” [in The Merchant of Venice].
Three centuries later, Mark Twain uses the phrase in Tom Sawyer: “Every eye fixed itself upon him; with parted lips and bated breath the audience hung upon his words, taking no note of time, rapt in the ghastly fascinations of the tale”. Today, I dare to use the phrase to describe how painful it has been to wait for Season 3 of Hannibal to start. I’ve impatiently been waiting with bated breath for Hannibal to start again. (Phrase definition: ‘Breathing that is subdued because of extreme emotion or emotional difficulty’).

There are hosts of reasons why I’ve been holding my breath in anticipation. Firstly, the season two finale was a breathtaking fiesta of the senses. Filled with subtle moments then ending with a crescendo the size of a meteor. Mortified by the prospect that Jack might be dead after he’s jabbed in the neck with a shard of glass. Simultaneously overwhelmed by Hannibal’s ‘guest,’ the mentally fragile Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl) pushing Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) out a two-story window – as we watched Alana paralyzed in pain, gasping for water filled breaths.

Hannibal season three gives us a new chapter to chew on. We begin with Lecter on the run in Europe, accompanied by his protégé psychiatrist Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson, The X-Files), sporting a new mission and a new identity. Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), Jack (Laurence Fishburne, The Matrix, CSI) and Alana (Caroline Dhavernas, Wonderfalls, The Pacific) don’t have a moment to recover from the events of the past season, finding themselves chasing the ghosts of their past.

THROWING SHADE

Definition: To give someone major attitude.
To expose someone’s flaws while giving major attitude.

Definition: Means excited, hyped up, crazy and/or outrageous.

YEET
Definition: If we could yell ‘Yes, Extremely Excited in a Text’ message it would be a ‘YEET’.
It’s like a silent person, yelling with excitement.

SQUAD
Definition: A group of friends. More than two people. The ‘Clique’ or ‘Crew’.

Definition: Acronym – My Reaction When.

Example

Definition: Acronym – Swear On Our Friendship. (This slang has replaced the old phrase “Say Word”).

Me: “I will buy your ticket to the Jay Z concert this summa’ if you ask Katie to give me her digits.”

CRAY CRAY
Definition: An extremely crazy person, place or object.

DEAD
Definition: Hilarious / no words can express / incredibly funny.

Rules
Usually used with a hashtag #DEAD or as a one-word sentence ending with an exclamation mark.

“I just watched the Justin Bieber Roast. #DEAD!”

DAMP
[SO DAMP]
Definition: When you finish something that was tiresome or long. Exhausting or emotionally ‘draining’.

Rules
Doesn’t necessarily mean negatively exhausting.
Also used to express excitement over something lengthy in a positive way.

“Bonnie I can’t believe I sat and watched Avatar again with you for the 3rd time. Bitch that movie is SO DAMP.”

SALTY
Definition: A person, who is rude, pissed off, angry and/or gives attitude.

Example
“I love Cam when he’s SALTY. He bitch-snaps and does a twirl, loves it.”

SWERVE
Definition A: “Get out of here” / “Get lost”
Definition B: When you’re about to use your amazing dating skills to get a new girl (or guy).

“I was on the bus with Zack and this cunt was all up in my space. Ugh, SWERVE bitch.”

“Angelina text me and said that Mariah is single now. Umma bout to SWERVE, watch dis.”

WHEELING AND DEALING
DIPPING AND DIVING
Definition A: Cheating while in a committed relationship.
Definition B: A personality that’s shady. A fraudulent personality. The act of Lying.

Rules
These two phrases are interchangeable and have the same general meaning. Dipping and diving is usually linked to sexual deviation.

Definition: Acronym – You Only Live Once.

Definition: To attend an event. To go somewhere.

You: “After work we’re having a barbeque at mom’s house. Are you gonna REACH?”

LACE UP
Definition: Get ready to accomplish something big.

Example
“Iggy Azalea betta LACE UP, calling herself a better rapper than Nicki Minaj. I see this queen bitch about to go ham. Don’t do it Iggy.”

HELLA
Definition: Really, really!

Example
“This Jerk chicken is HELLA good. Here try some.
Don’t forget the sauce.”

SOFT
Definition: A person that is weak, or afraid. An event that is boring and/or low attendance.

Me: “Do you think the Jonas Brothers concert is gonna be anything like the Coldplay gig?”
You: “Nah, Bro their SOFT.”

MERKED
Definition A:  An ugly person, place and/or thing.
Definition B: A disaster / a mess / drunk behavior.

SWAG
Definition: Being stylish and/or having an individual (unique) style.

FLEEK
Definition: Means gorgeous, beautiful, amazing and/or perfect.

THIRSTY
Definition: Refers to an extremely horny, clingy, desperate and/or sexually passionate person.

Me: “Ohh child, did you see RiRi at Bloke club last night? She was all over the security guard…”
You: “That’s cuz she’s a THIRSTY bitch. Damn, it ain’t easy being single. Love her.”

GHOST
[GHOSTING]
Definition: A person who has disappeared.

Rules
GHOST: Is generally referenced about a person who’s social media presence suddenly and inexplicably goes quiet (abnormal absence of activity) and has no activity. Often this person is simply busy and is not doing this intentionally.

GHOSTING: Is intentionally deleting all social media – changing all social media handles and changing phone numbers etc… All with the purpose to hide from a person or group of people.

Example
Me: “What happened to Mandy and Sonia? These bitches are GHOSTING.
I tried to call Sonia and she changed her phone number.
I emailed Mandy and I got a failed delivery notification. WTF!”

Definition: Means “Goodbye Nobody” and/or “Goodbye Loser”.

Rules
The name Felicia is substituted instead of the real name of the person who’s being spoken to. This signifies that ‘no one cares’ the person is leaving. When used on a male it’s also a way of calling them ‘chicken’ [scared-to-participate] or a ‘loser’.

Here is a film that is essentially one big car chase and yet George Miller creates an intricate world within the dirt and metal. Unlike the films before it, Miller uses the gritty premise to highlight the characters raw dictatorship and totalitarianism.

It’s a white-knuckle,
 balls-to-the-wall,
nasty symphony,
and we loved every second of it!

When analyzing the average car chase – predictably the chase ends with the pursuer or the pursued failing to accomplish their intent. Fury Road understands that no one wins. Except FURY ROAD – Only Miller could understand that the chase itself is destiny and not what’s at the end on the road, so he keeps the audience moving, constantly. The movie ends and no one gets up out of their seat for fear they might fall out of the moving truck. A film built with speed and consistency that grabs our attention and refuses to let go.

It is the seatbelt you forgot you were wearing.

The films lengthy action sequences are the character defining narrative.
We boldly see into the characters’ lives and personalities through the eyes of the action sequences.
The plot thrives in a familiar world of military tribunals managing portions of the wasteland.
Gasoline is the currency the movie uses to fuel the fight, yet the underlying theme of emancipation and freedom rings clear in the little children’s eyes.

A host of brilliant performances by Hugh Keays-Byrne as IMMORTAN JOE and the honest chemistry between the forever-tortured heroes, Charlize Theron as the one-armed big-rig driver named FURIOSA and loner Tom Hardy, MAX. Honorable mentions to the women playing JOE’s ‘breeders’ and Nicholas Hoult as NUX – They elevated the films sense of humanity and made us care about the characters fate.

Miller has constructed the first chapter in the new trilogy as a complete account of the characters pain, and he has carefully set the stage for MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND sequel. We applauded his masterful attention to detail and hold our breath while gritting our teeth, waiting for the next installment.
